I've found out who this lot are. They've been spamming me every month for a while now. The office of the information commissioner have been unable to trace them so I finally opted for a callback.
They are:
www.directmobilephones.com
10 High Street,
Camberley
Surrey
GU15 3SX.
The company name given by the salesman was "ETC Communications".

I've been getting these every month for the past six months now and I'm fed up with them! They come from different numbers each time. Last month's was the same message as reported here but from a different number.
I received two identical ones this month.

You can't win, if you reply either way you could be a victim of a premium rate scam. Who knows what that text will cost you?!
According to http://www.ukphoneinfo.com, the numbers involved so far were originally allocated to O2, Vodaphone and Orange networks (although this means little since numbers can be kept when you transfer). This must be a scam.
Even if it is genuine, then the only way to work out who they are in order to file a complaint with the Office of the Information Commissioner is to request a callback. In doing so, you would effectively give them permission to send you all sorts of rubbish.
Does anyone know who this shoddy outfit are?

Try the ICSTIS site:
http://www.icstis.org.uk/icstis2002/PhoneNumberLookup/AskPhoneNumber.asp
These companies are usually 'gateway' sites (access providers) for other companies.
I had bother with the 89069 short code and managed to get a refund via Wireless Information Network Ltd. The company that sent the text message was called 24X. They were actually quite helpful and I received a cheque for the full amount (in my case 5) within a couple of days.
Good luck,
The Beagle

Promotion Number: 89252 - Over a period of 6 months both myself and my boyfriend received premium rate messages from several numbers. The list is as follows:
89966
89797
87140
80062
84484
60025
69690
89069
83222
89252
This list is by no means exhaustive. We'd love to know if anyone can help us find out who runs these services in order that we can press for some of our hard earned back. We have both been required to change our numbers just to stop them happening and Orange (our service provider) haven't been exactly forthcoming with details, just advising us to text "STOP" which worked in some cases but not all. Anyone who can help just give me a shout.

Spam TXT from 89301 (POBox 39822) belongs to...
|
|
|
http://www.switchfire.com/
The Royal Mail confirmed the PO Box belongs to them.
If the PO Box in the text message is preceded by VN or VNS, the affiliate company (of Switchfire) is Vinista, allegedly a German company.
I received spam from them left than 20 minutes ago. I have already reported it to icstis.
Steve Harris from Switchfire has contacted the company requesting the removal of my number from their database.
I will also be writing a written complaint to Icstis and Switchfire.

Promotion Number: 89252 - Hi Firefury, I have, in the last week, received two texts from 86333, they both contained "jokes", very expensive jokes that weren't very funny and to add insult to injury they both cost me 3.00 each.
Never having encountered this problem before I dont know what to do next, I have no credit left to text anything back to them and daren't put any on my phone as the last twice I have it has almost instantly gone.
I have contacted Orange and am still awaiting a reply, have you any ideas?

Hi there
I was reading you post about 3rd party txts and I completly understand when u say the network wont help. I work for T-mobile and when the same kind of thing happens to our customers we cant help either because the charge is comming from the 3rd party and not from the network. The thing about 3rd party sms is that they should only come at customers request however we all know thats not the case!
You should do some investgating before you contact Orange. More than likley the advisor wont be very clued up on all the legallitys of these services therefore the more knowlegable you are the easyer your argument will be.
Firstly check (on your bill) when you allegedly contacted 89252 in the first instance. If you have recieved a 3rd party before you sent one then Orange should be able to tell that you did not request the service.
Never! reply to a 3rd party sms to stop it with any text other than the specified stop command. For example if there text says to stop the service text STOP POLY ONE and you just wright STOP this will not work. In fact any message you send to a 3rd party which is not the correct stop command could inadvertently sign you up for there services and put you on there mailing list! If unsure of stop commands check with your network provider they can get these commands for you.
What you can also do is contact TPS (Telephone preference service) You register your home and mobile number with TPS ( www.tpsonline.co.uk) Tos is a legal register that all companys are required to check before for exaple cold call your home number or send sms to you r mobile! If your registered with them and you have specified to the 3rd party company that you do not want to recieve these messages and they do not have permission to contact you then they are breaking the law. You can then contact TPS and they can sort it out for you!!! ( not enought ppl know about this)
If the third party mesages are still comming through. Ask your Network provider to remove the Mobile terminating premium sms feature form your account. This can stop all reverse bill sms comming through however use this as a last resort as is can prevent downloads and ringtones, games, wallpapers etc.
Finally you can change your mobile number if all else fails ( it should be sorted at tps!) Most mobile operators will charge you to change your mobile number however if you are recieveing malicious calls or sms they can give you the number change for free. (they do on tmobile anyway) there would just be the inconvenience of having to tell all your friends and family the new number.
Anyway I hope that helps you out. Orange wont credit you back the charges for the sms your best bet is to try the 3rd party for that but hit them with with everything youve got! Threaten them with TPS that usually shakes them! By the way when you speak you your network ALWAYS ask for the advisors NAME, TEAM NUMBER, and DEPARTMET!!! This way they will have to help you because theyll b scared ull complain about them! Speak you there manager if there no help. There obliged to do all this
Good Luck

Reverse billed unsolicited SMS
|
|
|
Promotion Number: 89252 - I am currently trying to resolve a dispute involving reverse billed SMS messages on my Orange phone.
Under about a week after I got my new contract (so new number and handset) I started getting unsolicited SMS messages from 89252 - I never requested them or replied to any SMS spam, they just started showing up. I dutifully forwarded each one to Orange's SPAM number, as I do with all SMS spam.
Today I was somewhat supprised to receive an SMS from the same number, saying: "Thanks 4 using MobileMatch. Each message received costs and average of 150p. This message is free. Text STOP to quit" - so it appears that not only am I receiving unsolicited messages, I'm also being charged for them!
Anyway, I immediately phoned Orange and expressed my concern - they informed me there was nothing they could do about it and I would need to follow the instructions to stop them. I explained that stopping them wasn't my immediate concern - I am more worried about the cost of the significant number of messages I have already received, whcih will obviously show up on my next bill. They were supprisingly unhelpful, not offering to do anything to help me, just telling me I needed to take it up with SwitchFire (the 3rd party company who is spamming me) and ICSTIS.
I was informed by Orange that I would be required to pay the disputed charges because Orange have "already paid the 3rd party". Failure for me to pay the disputed charges immediately would result in both my handsets being barred and a bad debt recorded on my credit record.
So tomorrow I must phone SwitchFire and ICSTIS and see if I can sort this mess out.
Why is it down to the end user to phone the 3rd part operators and sort these things out? I'm not being billed by that operator, I'm being billed by Orange so shouldn't it be their responsibility to waste time sorting a dispute out?
More worryingly, how is it possible that a company with whom I have no contract can bill me for services I never requested? If they invoiced me directly then I could refuse to pay the invoice until the dispute is resolved but this is not an option since refusing to pay the Orange invoice will result in a loss of off services.
I've already wasted 35 minutes on the phone to Orange trying to convince them to help resolve the dispute, how much longer will I need to waste talking to SwitchFire and ICSTIS? I have always thought that reverse charged SMS is a bad idea since the client has no way to reject the messages before being charged - this kinda proves my point.
I was also informed by Orange that it is possible to sign up for services over the web without authenticating myself as the owner of the phone - I cannot believe that it can be true since this would allow anyone to sign anyone else up to pay services.

So far as I've been able to understand over the past few months of operating Grumbletext, texting STOP does not tend to have the same effect as replying 'unsubscribe' etc to a spam email; it doesn't seem to cause more text spams to be sent to you - at worst it simply will not work (ie the sending company will ignore your request), but it does certainly work with some spammers who seem to view themselves at the more legitimate end of the business, whatever we all think of them.

I note the Grumbletext post of 16 September 2003 in which there is a claim that Grumbletext are in dialog with these crooks. Why on earth are they still operating then? I note that the link on this site to report to ICSTIS doesn't work either? I made the report to ICSTIS directly at http://www.icstis.org.uk. |
Hi from Adrian at Grumbletext -
Thanks for your post, a couple of points in response:
1) sorry about the broken link - I've now fixed it
2) note to anyone using the facility to simultaneous send a complaint to ICSTIS - how it's supposed to work - when you open the page to post a message, there is a tick box at the bottom (already ticked) to also submit a complaint to ICSTIS - when you post your message it should also open up a new window, with a pre-filled out ICSTIS complaint form which you can then submit. I would really like to hear from anyone who does not get the ICSTIS complaint form to pop up - what can happen is that 'popup blockers' can stop the new window opening. The page is specifically scripted for this problem not to occur and has been tested to work with both the Google popup blocker and Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper - but if anyone does have the problem please let me know at adrian.harris@grumbletext.co.uk.
3) ref being in contact with the company sending out these texts - we were indeed in touch with them and in the end they said they were unwilling to divulge the details of their client who was actually sending out the texts - we then updated our report (http://www.grumbletext.co.uk/sossmsreports/sossmsfancyadate.htm) to reflect this and said that they should be considered the service provider and the target of complaints
4) ref this company the Grumbletext position is: we are unclear whether there is some quasi-real dating service behind it (there is some evidence that there might be) but this is immaterial as they are clearly continuing to spam liberally which since December 2003 is an illegal activity.
5) We contacted ICSTIS about this lot way back in September 2003 and followed up with a letter in January - we have gotten nothing out of ICSTIS and seen no adjudication against them. When ICSTIS can be made to get focussed on 'services' like this they can be useful fining and barring them etc. I have only recently set up the posting pages so that they automatically generate a formal ICSTIS complaint form which goes directly into ICSTIS's database so to get their focus on this service again now, it is vital that anyone getting these messages takes the extra moment to submit the ICSTIS form at the same time.
Thank, Adrian at Grumbletext

I've just had a new one. Text message about finding the right partner and instructions to either "Go" or "Stop".
There was a P. O. box address which is:
P. O. Box 39822
W11 1NX
We will have to write to them, don't you think?

"You haven't found the perfect partner? Don't give up! Just answer "GO" and enjoy the community! To opt out txt back "STOP". POBox 39822 W11 1NX"

This company is evidently still operating. I received this on Orange: 16/03/2004 from +447781478223 - "How about getting in touch with folks waiting for company? Just answer “GO” and enjoy the community! To opt out txt back “STOP” POBox 39822 W11 1NX"
These messages are anoying, irritating and waste my time, along with gullible peoples money and ICSTIS should hit these people big time.
