Endorsement by Sir George Young MP :(10/02/05)

"I've been impressed by the range and depth of information about premium rate and related scams to be found at Grumbletext. One problem for me as a politician trying to fight this nuisance is the difficulty of getting to grips with the many nuances of who is responsible for what in the regulation and supply of services. I know that this affects every user too and I much appreciate the helpful environment at Grumbletext - together with the freedom and informality that only a private sector approach can provide."

Re: I've written to the Advertising Standards Authority
Re "Re: I've written to the Advertising Standards Authority" posted by angelfalls at 10:18 13/05/08 ... My mother is one of those currently caught up in this scam as well. She has (like others) been told that they have a corporate buyer for her timeshare and the deal will go through later this month, provided that she signs the contract. She was also told, however, that if she doesn't sign the contract, she forfeits her up front payment but she has to had to pay in order to see the contract. That I believe is illegal under the terms of the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999. Also, the address quoted as the office of ETOO in the UK, Trafalgar House, Grenville Place, Mill Hill, London , NW7 3SA. I have been in touch this morning with Trafalgar House reception (0208 9061700) who have confirmed that ETOO do not rent office space there, but make use of their advertised "Full Postal and Message service- (available for those not yet ready for the overhead of office premises)". Re "I've written to the Advertising Standards Authority" posted by Linda9 at 10:55 10/05/08 ... Hi to everyone who has written in about ET00. i joined this site yesterday just to say ****THANK YOU**** to everyone who have written about their experience with ETOO. I want to thank you as you all have just stopped me pay £950 to ETOO to sell my time share. My story is the same as all of you but with one difference i didnt pay out any money because of this site. If i hadnt of stumbled on to grumble text i would be DOWN £950 by now as today is the day i was going to pay them. i felt so bad after i found out it was a scam i couldent beleive that the woman NADINE was so nice and so helpful and all along she knew what she was doing. i really dont know how they live with it. the worst part is that its advertised all over the tv, papers, internet etc!!! i would love to be able to set something up where we could actually scam the people who do this, scam the scammers just to show them how mortifying it is to find out some on has stolen from you someone who you trust and beilive they are looking after you best interest. But knowing our luck we would probally be caught and arrested. The same as people on benifits. you get the ones who are intenially scamming either CLAMING they cannot work or the ones who do all cash in hand jobs and clam that they dont have a job. the always seem to get away with it, but then you get the hard working people who dont claim for anything always got good books pay their tax bills etc, then one week end they might help a faimly member build an extension something like that and get paid for it. they dont bother putting it through their books only a little bit of cash in hand work that probally wont happen again but they get CAUGHT!! alwayes the ones who really innocent and didnt mean any harm are the ones who are punished. This ones bothered me more than other scam as it was on tv. i never normally falls for scam on the internet i am very warery of those but i do trust what i see on they tv, i know its strange saying that given the recent goings on with the phone line scams. just that all the links GOOGLE has bought up about ETOO and all the papers investigation you would think that they woauld take it of the air untill its name is cleared. It makes me sick dont know about anyone else but i feel so vunerable every time im about to fall for a scam and i find out, for days later im still gutted about it! But THANK YOU again everyone for stopping me fall for another one xxx View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message

I've written to the Advertising Standards Authority
I've written to the ASA who are now investigating them. I went out to Malaga last week after ETOO told me that they had a Corporate Client who wanted to make me an offer for my timeshare, a guaranteed sale provided my paperwork was up to date, which it was. When I met the 'corporate client' and got into the car to be taken to the offices, I was asked who had introduced me. When I said ETOO, the lady went into a script saying 'Oh no not ETOO, we've had so many problems with this company, they had no right to say that we would buy the timeshare, we don't buy timeshare, we are a holiday company selling holidays, wait until my boss hears this one!!' When we arrived at the offices her and her boss began explaining that ETOO had put an advert on TV and had been so overwhelmed by the response that they had asked CLUB CLASS CORPORATE to help them with some clients. They then went on to vilify the company and said that they had had many people coming out to Malaga with similar guarantees and that they were so angry with ETOO!' They then went on to say that no-one will buy timeshares nowadays because of the increasing maintenance fees which were escalating out of control, of course, she provided a print out showing the scaryfigures, and said that there is no way of gettng out of my timeshare contract and that I all I would be doing was passing on a huge debt onto my children!! BUT if I joined their company, they could actually take the timeshare in as some sort of part exchange. I believe the cost of joined is anything from £3000 for the lowest fee up to £20,000+ depending on how much your timeshare costs I guess. They told me that 9 out of 10 people that come through their door actually take up their offer. Of course they do, some people have already paid out £300 - 800 before going their, plus their airfares etc. and then been told they didn't have a sale, that the escalating costs of maitenance fees was going be so high, they would be unmanageable and that the only way out was to buy into their holiday company!! The acting of these people is superb, but I declined and left. I wasn't taken in by them. When I got home I immediately went on the internet and found out THEY ARE THE SAME COMPANY, based at the same address in Mijas, Malaga ... THEY'RE A DOUBLE ACT!! 2 companies, masquarading as one. Despicable. I've now written to them asking for them to reimburse my costs of flying out there and I've also told them I would like to meet them when they are in the UK to discuss their business practices. How can people do this as a job?? View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message

Re: ETOO & the International Timeshare Resale Associatio
Re "Re: ETOO & the International Timeshare Resale Associatio" posted by GaryP at 11:31 07/05/08 ... My girlfriends mother (aged 80) has paid £670 to ETOO having been sold the same story as everyone else on here. She is keen to travel to Malaga but is not aware of this site or the Daily Mirror exposure. She is vulnerable and confused and quite frankly she is so trusting of people that she wouldn't know a scam if it fell on her. It would appear from the comments here that the scam is that ETOO take some money off people with the promise that you will get your money back if you travel to Malage to meet the buyer and sign the papers etc. Has anyone ever got as far as Malaga and if so what happens when you get there? Are there any satisfied customers out there ? View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message
Maplins (8)

Maplin's
I bought a Free 2 air satellite receiver on March 4th 2008. On April 3rd it died completely. Took it back for an exchange or possibly a refund/upgrade but the somewhat dimwitted assistant informed me that it was not Maplin policy to exchange/refund after 28 days and that the unit would have to be returned for examination. I immediately saw red and told the "assistant what I thought of him and his comany policy. There then followed a heated debate about The sale of Goods Act and customer service and I stated that any reputable company would have exchanged or refunded with no quibble. His response "We are not any other reputable company. The assistant then filled in a return/examination form which he asked me to sign. I signed and added that this was not a request for repair and that I required a refund. The assistant then tore up the form stating that I was not allowed to write on HIS form and grumbled that he had now got to fill in a new one. I then asked this assistant for his name as his neck ID tag was facing backwards but he refused point blank to disclse it. I demanded his name again as I was going to lodge a complaint with Maplin's MD. He then smugly said that I couldn't do that as I did not know the MD's name. Yes this is perfectly true. I asked for his name again and he said "I am Steve the Assistant Manager and that is all you need to know". I asked another assistant for the first assistant's name and he stated that it was Bob. I then expressed my disgust at the attitude of the so-called Assistant Manager, Maplin's couldn't care less attitude for their customers, their unhelpful and arrogant staff and their non existant customer care policy. The moral here is - Buy from Maplin at your peril cos once they have got your money they don't give a damn. Remember most of the stuff they sell can be purchased elsewhere and usually cheaper. I have written to the MD/GM at maplin's HO and am waiting on a reply. View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message

Re: My problem fixed!?!
Re "My problem fixed!?!" posted by wendy1975 at 7:46 08/04/08 ... Hi Wendy, wait till your here what happened to us. We got 2 "salesman" yesterday. I was in bed (work nights), so my wife dealt with them. She was in the garden with our toddlers when a guy knocks on the gate and asks for some of her time. She said "no thanks, I'm not buying anything", well he kicked off big style, "how can you say that, you don't know what I'm selling" etc.. In the end she ordered him off the property, and he refused, saying "Make me!". My wife woke me up, and I came down to ask him to "Stop harassing my wife", he slammed down his leaflets and said "Come on then big man, lets get it on". I refused to enter into any kind of fight, so he started shouting obscenities, his partner just laughed at us. I asked him to stop swearing in front of the kids, so he just stood there shouting "F*ck F*ck F*ck" over and over, then called my wife nbugs bunny (she has gappy teeth). I then asked for a flyer so I could report him, and he said "Come and get one if you want one". I then spotted that he was from VIRGO, my wife said "Oh that Asian firm!" - she shoudn't have done I guess, but then he just shouted "That's racist, right your in a shitload of trouble now, you better get them kids out of the house tonight because ITS HAPPENING TONIGHT, your big mouthed wife has got you in trouble, and you're gonna pay" Well we got the police out straight away, they had a word but said that "it's not actually a threat" because he didn't actually say that he was going to hit you, just "it's happening". Sorry for the long post but boy is it annoying, how on earth does he expect to sell anything with that attitude, the police were going to ring Virgo over it, I hope he gets sacked. All of this because my wife would not let him leave her a flyer - unbelievable.[/b] View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message

Checkatrade
I have deliberated long and hard over whether to post this message as I have had some response from Checkatrade since the last posting. After the last post they had the decency to contact me about this issue and things looked hopeful. I was contacted by letter, obviously traced back from the year and half ago when I first put my complaint about Chris McCarthy Mobile Mechanic. The person I spoke to on the phone thereafter was very friendly and understanding and things looked hopeful as she mentioned that they had recently expanded their complaints team and take these sort of things more seriously. I then sent a detailed email about the chain of events, sent a copy of the letters of compromise I sent Chris McCarthy and the County Court Judgement against him, with the £1500 he owes and then heard nothing. After a few days I noticed that he was no longer on Checkatrade and I enquired what had happened via email. What I was told was that it was an internal decision to no longer include him. I enquired as to whether or not he was contacted and was told he was not. So, a rather lacklustre result after I got my hopes up about them intervening. Result after a few hours worth of work was precisely no better off than before. Again, I do have to question their value, they didn't credit check the guy so I don't know what constitutes vetting? I was told they didn't credit check people without their permission but surely anyone with nothing to hide wouldn't mind being credit checked when asked. I have recently found out, through checking public records, that Chris McCarthy is the owner of 4 other County Court judgements so not exactly what you'd call a model citizen. I would like it if these people would come forward and perhaps together we can take this man to Court and actually compell him to come to defend himself about his behaviour. He never had any intention to come to court nor to even pay and the law has let him get away with it just because he has moved address. Marvellous. But the question that arose for me was Checkatrade in someway negligent or accountable? They obviously don't so. A service with no accountability is indeed a unique luxury to have in this day and age. As for Checkatrade, nothing more than a glorified messageboard with no power or willingness to intervene or do anything to protect the consumer which is in complete contraction to its so called mission statement. Lack of transparency in the process and no added value of using their site. Stick with other sites, you may get a better success rate than I did, which isn't hard. Again, has reinforced my earlier thoughts that Checkatrade merely look after their fee paying clients not the consumer. Checkatrade - 100 % failure rate for tradesmen used, 100 % unsatisfied with the people that they represent, 100 % waste of time and 100% worse off for the experience. I would recommend that anyone use Checkatrade people with a huge amount of caution. I am now going to consult my solicitor to see which way to take this from here on in as this is becoming a huge legal and moral issue for me now. Whats Local Magazine- MT Media... (96)
   07/05 16:51:16

I'm with you on this one. I too am awaiting unpaid commission/wages from MT Media, and unfortunatly the nicest person to ever work there (Jaynie) has left, good on her though! I heard from someone who eventually awnserd the phone there that Lindsay Cooke is now handling HR, but she's always in "a meeting" god knows what about but she never returns my calls, for 2 solid weeks I tried her to no avail. I wrote a letter asking when I was going to recieve the money I was owed (I originally recieved the same letter as you saying that I was due the money) and requested a reply within 5 working days or I would take it to the small claims court. Surprise, surprise, no reply. I have tried the phone numbers listed on their own website again and now they are all dead. I have no idea if they're chaning the numbers again, moved or closed it down, but I have absolutley had it with this company. I worked long hard hours, as we all did, made them thousands and thousands of pounds and we are all having this problem. I have no idea if they have shut the office down, moved or what they are up to but there MUST be a way we can all stand together and get what is owed to us! Its just an extra kick in the teeth to recieve a letter saying you're owed money, but we cant get it. View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message

Hi Thank you so much for your reply. I have today received a phone call from Capquest. I do not know how they have got my telephone number but I am very angry as my number Is EX DIRECTORY, on NO documents has my telephone number been provided. I pretended I wasnt here, as I have spent all night at hospital with a bit of a scare with my pregnancy, so I think now they are going to harrass me on the telephone all the time. Who do I need to contact with regards to them finding my telephone number as this has not been given out, so somewhere along they lines, they have found this out illegally. Thanks
Hi again EssexV, Like you, my phone number is also ex-directory but they still got hold of it. I suspect that your number was probably passed on by the original creditor, or having got hold of your address Capquest have got one of their trained chimps to waste a bit of time searching it out. Are you ex-d from both the phone book AND directory enquiries? If your number is still available from directory enquiries then I'm afraid anyone can ask for it. However, they are not entitled to harrass you by ringing your number, so somehow you should let them know that you will only deal with them in writing. You could always invest in a Caller Display Unit, which will allow you to see the number of the person calling, then you can decide whether or not to pick up the phone. Also, try leaving an answer machine turned on - they will still leave messages for you, but you can sleep sound in the knowledge that it is probably the most interesting conversation any of them have had all day Laughing Ultimately, you are not refusing to communicate with these people, you are simply choosing your preferred method (in writing) as you have personal reasons for doing so and you certainly don't need to feel harrassed or pinned up against the wall in your current condition. Don't forget to ask for help from organisations out there, who are more than willing to assist you - but you have to ask! View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message

Dear Grumbletexters We are concerned that there are postings on this site from people who have not appeared to have contacted our customer relations department. We appreciate that there are many varied reasons for clients wishing to resell their timeshares, such as escalating management fees or unachievable exchanges; and these coupled with the present economic climate may also be the very reasons which contribute to the slow down in timeshare sales. In view of this ETOO wish to invite all genuine complainants to contact us to arrange for a consultant to discuss individual cases in order to reach a satisfactory conclusion. Although ETOO has a consultancy centre situated in Malaga, Spain, one of the two main trading areas for pan European timeshare; our quest to constantly improve our services to our clients means we are pleased to announce that from June 08 we will be conducting regular clinics around the UK where we will invite you to attend and discuss any unresolved issues you may have. Therefore should you wish to attend please contact us on pr@etoo.com giving your direct e-mail address and telephone number to enable us to make an appointment at your convenience. 700034624 - Stealth Reverse charge SMS! HELP!! New method!!!
8700 Remember this?
Quote:
Hi All, On my T-Mobile bill I am being charged £1.50 a time from 700034624. T-Mobile has said this is the known zamano / reverse premium rate SMS messages going around. HOWEVER I never actually receieve any text messages!!!!! I can not find any information on this site or google about 700034624. They have been appearing on my bill 3 times every 4th day, £1.50 a time and at the exact time of 16:45. Yet I have not received any messages!!!!!!!! Is this a new scam / method? Please please advise. T-Mobile are unwilling to bar the account, unwilling to help claiming I have signed up to these services (believe me, I didn't nor did anyone else). I cant cancel my line as im still tied into a contract - I think I might have to change my number... I've lost faith in the mobile phone industry. PLEASE ADVISE
Well, after pestering Ofcom about this for the past couple of months (PhonePayPlus simply refused to engage with me on the subject) Ofcom finally got back to me with a straight story:
Quote:
I am grateful to you for having alerted us to this. There does appear to be a problem and it looks to be exactly is as you describe it. where a customer has a 5 digit short code listed on his itemised bill, he can text "STOP" to that number, and can go on to the PhonepayPlus number checker to verify the identity of the service provider behind the service in question. however, it seems that T-Mobile and Virgin do not list the 5 digit short code at all on their bills, but instead choose to put an 7000XXXXX "service ID" on their bill alongside each charge. this means that consumers getting a bill cannot (i) check the identity of the provider through the PhonepayPlus number checker; and (ii) for subscription services, use the "STOP" command. That's a description of the problem. Two possible solutions: PhonepayPlus starts listing 7000XXXXX service IDs as part of its number checker; Virgin and T-Mobile start to list 5 digit short codes on their bills. The second of these looks like the better solution, not least because the first still does not allow the consumer to use the STOP command. We are engaging with the mobile operators to understand better why they use 8700XXXXX service IDs rather than list the 5 digit short code. I consider this to be a serious issue as, on the face of it, it makes it harder for consumers to validate their usage of phonepaid services and to opt out of particular subscription services. We are working with PhonepayPlus to find a way forward on this.

Thanks for the reply, its very frustrating, maybe we should all hold back part payment of our telephone bills, until the providers start to clamp down on scammers View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message

Log your messages
After having several dealings with non solicited text messages, I have decided to log any received premium rate text messages and complaints, I make to Pay Phone (who are unfortunately very weak). O2 now have a thing called Blue Book that keeps an online record of messages etc, this could be useful if you ever need proof that you haven't subscribed to these texts. you will also have proof that you have text the "STOP" command, which so many of these companies ignore. In a world where we are concerned about identity theft and Data Protection, the same rules don't seem to apply to our phone numbers, lets face it anyone can enter your number on to a scam website, without any proof of identity. It would be interesting to know who the best service providers are, when dealing with premium rate text. I have started receiving messages again after returning to O2, however they did refund me after I complained. Do some service providers attract premium rate services? Re "Re: Has anyone heard of Waptonesnow.com" posted by beautywiz at 10:15 02/04/08 ... @ beautywiz it's quite possible these crooks originally purchased your number from a data collecting company. There are lots of dubious ways they obtain them. The scams are carried out by Service Provider( they arrange billing with your mobile operator and short code ) working with a Content Provider(they provide the wap site and crap ). When the regulator(PayPhonePlus aka Icstis) investigates they may shut the content provider down and fine the service provider up to 10% of the stolen money (you can decide for yourself whether that is a deterrent). When the content provider is shut down they simply change name and register another web-site. They can then target you through another service provider. the list of service providers used to target you: m/blox MX telecom Monstermob Tanla/2comm All of them have received numerous fines totaling many tens of thousands of pounds. @omega1"When on earth are the authorities going to get tough with these shadowy companies?" This 'industry' is a multi-billion pound industry and is protected by duplicit politicians and regulators. It doesn't help that the chairman of one of the worst companies (mblox) also sits on the board of the regulator (PhonePayPlus) View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message

text message scammers
Well done you. I'm the person who had a problem with Stealthnet, who effectively stole money from my son. When on earth are the authorities going to get tough with these shadowy companies? They are making money by deception, targeting children in a lot of cases which is disgusting. View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message

Re: Has anyone heard of Waptonesnow.com
My question is how did you get my information in the first place when I have never signed up to your service. I'm not stupid, so when I received your Wap message, I checked out your website via my compuuter, not my phone, to see who you were. I never use my phone for internet services. Its blatantly obvious that all companies of this type share and sell information, or even just take pot luck texting random numbers. Has anyone heard of Waptonesnow.com
I am sick of trying to get rid of these parasites sending me premium rate sms, or Wap text messages. Just as I thought I'd got rid of one company, then I receive a Wap message from waptonesnow.com I have never subscribed to any of them. I visited their website and surprise surprise! its very vague, giving no information on who they are. They are also very crafty, asking you to enter your phone number to opt out, "yer right!" because underneath in small print it also says, that they reserve the right to pass on any information you leave to third parties. If anyone has has dealing with this company or knows who they might be. please let me know. Mad View this post in context of subject discussion Post a reply to this message

I lost about £80.00 (taken off my 13 year old son's mobile phone as he opened text messages) about three years ago. The Company behind the scam - STEALTHNET LIMITED - if I remember rightly they are in some way connected to Vodafone. I complained to Offcom, Offsted and the Ombudsman at the time. Imagine my dismay a couple of weeks ago when I wanted passport advice and the first two sites appearing at the top of a list provided by Google were premium rate scams operated by STEALTHNET (I note they have since removed their name, I did complain to the Passport Office, Offcom, etc., again). Why is this insidious company still trading? Why aren't tougher laws in place, doesn't anyone care??? The name is a pun on the way they make their money. There is a company called A2B Telecomm offering "off the shelf" services as follows: "Reverse Charge SMS generates revenue by charging users for receiving messages on their mobile. Tariffs go from 25p up to £5 per message". I wouldn't be surprised to find out they are in some way connected with STEALTHNET. Well, if you can't beat 'em join 'em. Am tempted to set up my own website with phoney information, buy an "off the shelf service" from A2B and watch the money roll in by way of reverse charge SMS/ and premium rate calls to me ......... In summary, I think REVERSE CHARGE SMS MESSAGING SHOULD BE MADE ILLEGAL. PREMIUM RATE NUMBERS SHOULD BE MADE ILLEGAL. SIMPLE AS THAT. You have a problem with a company which you want to sort out

Use Grumbletext to record your phone calls with difficult companies, so that you can prove what was said with an email containing a link to the recording of the conversation

Use Grumbletext to find out how easy and cheap it is to take your dispute with a company to the Small Claims Court, and now it's even easier with an online facility

We always recommend posting some information about your problem on our forum - you get back at the company by warning others about them, and you may also find people respond to your post with useful information

You can also search on Grumbletext to see what useful information other people have put up - maybe people have had exactly the same problems as you - start with the 'Search Grumbles' facility at the top left of any Grumbletext page, and if you need to refine your search click on Advanced Search (available just underneath 'Search Grumbles' on all pages) to find out how

Or, click here to find out more about sorting out problems with companies on Grumbletext

You have a complaint about a company which you would like to post on this website

Posting up a complaint about a company to let people know about your experience of them is very simple, just click the 'post message' link below to get the info on what to do. Do not use this link for matters to do with premium rate call or text problems (see below)
post a message in the Grumbletext: General Consumer forum

Grumbletext is very heavily covered by Google - your posts directly impact the companies which let you down by warning others not to do business with them

You have a problem with premium rate telephone calls or texts which you want to sort out

Grumbletext has a special section, called SOS Premium Rate, entirely devoted to problems with premium rate telephone calls or texts, including emails which promote them.

Posting the premium rate-related spam/scams/cold calls you've been subjected to and the problems you have had up onto the Grumbletext site is a great way to warn others not to fall for them, which stops the companies behind them making so much money

To get an overview of the issue and information on how you can deal with these problems click on the link below :

If you don't want an introduction or further inforamtion, to find out what we've got on the specific premium rate communication you are enquiring about, try doing a search in the 'Search Grumbles' box at the top of this (and any) page. Best thing is to try all or part of the premium rate number, typically beginning 09 and totalling 11 digits or in the case of texts, beginning usually with 8 (sometimes 6 or 2) and totalling either 4 or 5 digits

If you are familiar with premium rate matters and just want to make a posting on the latest one you received, please click the following link:
post a message in the Grumbletext: General Consumer forum

If this is a new subject to you and you know little about it, you will want to get an overview of the issue and information on how you can deal with these problems - please click on the link below :

You are looking for information before buying or you're just browsing

We have a powerful search engine on every page of Grumbletext - the 'Search Grumbles' box at the top left of every page. If you are trying to find information on a company or topic, that's the best place to start. You can refine your searching by clicking the Advanced Search link just below 'Search Grumbles' which tells you what refinements you can make - once you are familiar you use the majority of those refinements in the 'Search Grumbles' box.

If you are not looking for anything in particular but just want to look around the site, you could start by clicking either of the 'Intro to..' links near the top of the Latest Posts section above on this page. Equally, you could try our Frequently Asked Questions page, or just follow links on some of the subjects covered in the 'Latest Posts' section above to get a feel.
